2008
1st post of the New Year, 2008.
This is the beginning of a year where the world population continues to rise on an Earth which is already struggling to cope with the existing number of humans living in overcrowded cities. Each of these humans continues to consume, draining the finite resources that this Earth has.
Greenhouse gases emittions continue to increase, further screwing up an already screwed up world weather pattern. More droughts, floods, extreme weather, dry spells and forest fires going around the world. Average temperature rises, melting polar ice caps and raises the sea level, threatening to drown some little red dot soon enough.
With more bad weather, crop yields will decrease and less food to feed more hungry mouths. The price of corn, wheat and rice had already increased due to bad harvest and looks good to keep on rising if this continues. And I’m not even going to go through the bird flu, hand-foot-mouth and mad cow diseases. That’s not all. Prices of everything have increased and will keep on increasing. Rising fuel costs means more transport cost (think petrol cost, cab fare, bus and MRTs). Living costs increase disproportionally with wages (taxes, inflation, health care etc).
Talking about health care reminds me of the wonderful variety of diseases and illness one can contract nowadays. Common things like AIDS, heart attacks, cancers and strokes aren’t enough. Mutations of common cold give SARS. Breeding of mosquitoes gives dengue. Guess that’s something for everyone.
It was as if diseases killing humans ain’t enough. Helpful humans had to lend a hand. The most active helpers had to be this little band of merrymakers called “terrorists”. They made a name for themselves in 2001 and hogged the limelight ever since. South Asia and Middle East are practically fully of their activies. Anyway, my tip is to watch for Pakistan. With the death of their main opposition leader and the upcoming elections, sparks and fireworks are bound to fly.
Well, with this kinda predictions of upcoming events, what more can one ask for? Like what someone sms-ed me earlier, Happy New Year.
