Ah… it’s been a long time since anyone has posted any meaningful things here and boy, the cobwebs are damn thick. But it’s alright, I’m back and meaningful posts are here to stay. Let me start with this one.

Today I helped my mother to wash the dishes.

Of course I did. And for the record, I’ve been washing the dishes for most of the holidays (ah, the life of a hermit… what to do?) but enough of the rubbish. Time to get serious.

One of the major things I did this holiday was to get rid of my double degree and did LASIK. The procedure was considered quite safe and for Singapore National Eye Centre (S.N.E.C.), they had a record of 0% major complications for LASIK (read: go blind after op). Well, since I’m typing this now, obviously I didn’t manage to zha their zhao pai, which is a good thing. I seem to have better luck destroying zhao pais of those related with skin care (NSC, BioSkin…) but that’s another story.

My doc told me that I had a thin cornea, meaning that I can’t go for corrective surgery if my vision was under/over corrected. The corrective surgery is free btw (loads of implications here, but I won’t delve into that). I don’t think I came out with perfect eyesight but since I go out, cross the road so many times and still haven’t long tio chia, I think that’s good enough.

Besides, even if I could do the corrective surgery, I don’t think I’ll like to go through that again. Sure, they’ll apply anesthetic eye drops so that you won’t fill the pain and the actual op actually lasted less than 5 min (from the time you step into the op theater till you step out. The time spent in the clinic and the waiting room is a lot more than that.) But it’s the things that happen during the 5 min that makes you petrified.

I forgot what they used to cut a flap on my eye but I remember it was something pushing on my eyeball. It didn’t cover my pupil coz I couldn’t see it. The doc just presses some device on the eyeball and the next moment, everything goes black. Imagine, for those of you who don’t even dare to put on contact lens, someone else pressing on your freaking eyeball…

Once they on the laser, you can smell a weird smell in the air. I think it’s a cross btw burnt flesh and dead lizards. Well, the lasers is for correcting your cornea and it definitely made me think about what does burnt cornea smells like. Then there’s a crackling sound coming from the laser that sounds like sparks flying all over the place. Makes me wonder if sparks are gonna fly from the beam of laser into my eye.

Well, the 1st op on my left eye was still ok, since the anesthetic eye drops just gave me a numbing feeling. I had no such numbing feeling on my right eye op. The nurse forgot to apply the freaking anesthetic eye drops for my 2nd op! It was a good thing that the sensations were similar to those of the 1st op, but it sure scared the shit outta me.

The weeks leading up to the healing of the cornea flaps were torturous as well. After the op, I couldn’t see anything so I couldn’t do anything. Worse still, I couldn’t sleep till 11pm that night. Half a day of cannot anything and cannot sleep. 2 words: pure torture. The only (dubious) good thing that happen during post op was that since I can’t rub my eyes before the cornea flaps healed, it sorta cure me the urge to rub my eyes.

Well, going through all these shit was worth it… I think. Of course, if I took care of my eyes in the beginning, none of these would have to happen. So after going through this op, it made me determined to protect my newly found (almost) perfect eyesight. For about 2 days or so. After that, it was back to my pre op days of games, although I did tried to cut down the hrs, but it was still quite long.

That’s quite typical of me. When I run into deep shit and start to kan cheong, I always tell myself: if I somehow survive this, there’s no way that I’ll let myself run into this kind of shit again. Hmm, some good examples would be tests and sometimes exams that I didn’t study for or started studying too late, I’ll tell myself: if I somehow manage to survive this, I’ll make sure I wouldn’t have to repeat this again. If I was lucky, I would forget to study until the next next test, but normally, the cycle repeats itself in the next test.

This reminds me of the movie “Click” that I saw on Monday night. The main character was starting to screw up his life totally and was shown what’s gonna happen if he keeps it up. Then he was given a chance to change the way he lives his life, which he did. That was where the movie ends. What we do not know was how long he could keep this up. Maybe when the next “test” is around the corner, he’ll revert back to his old ways? Maybe he had such a huge shock that he’ll always put his family 1st? Kinda hard to say, but maybe that’s what I need. A very huge shock that won’t wear off so soon, then I’ll go “studies 1st”.

Anyway, the movie was a very good show. Full of surprises. It was totally different from what I expected after seeing the trailer. Instead of a comedy, it turns out to be quite a tearjerker. Well the 1st half was kinda hilarious but when Michael’s life began to go outta control, it took on a different tune altogether. Some of the most touching scenes would include Michael going back to the last time he saw his dad and had the “I love you son” & “I love you too dad” conversation. Another would be Michael rushing out of hospital trying to tell his son that his family is more important. Michael wanted to prevent his son from making the same mistakes as he did, even if it was at the expense of his life.

There were some other surprises as well. I expected Morty to be a mad scientist but he turned out to be a non human, an angel of death. Michael’s death wasn’t the end of the show, though it was a possible way to end the show. He was only seeing the consequences of him leading his current lifestyle and was returned to the time before he got the remote control.

All in all, this is the best show I’ve seen for a long, long time. Add that to me getting to eat my $3.5 chao fan with egg, this is really one hell of a Monday night.
